J08. German Rosie the Riveter

Anonymous young woman’s photo album documenting her training and service with the Dresden streetcar. The photographs show the streetcars; the young woman in conductor uniform; all female dorms; classmates and group photos (all women); group exercise and group camping trips.

Similar to the U.S. war effort, women in Germany were employed during the war for positions that were traditionally held by men. Although there are many photo albums documenting men’s war service, albums dedicated to women’s war efforts are scarce.

Faux leather cord bound photo album; pre-printed cover page and [24] lvs. of photographs with spider web interweaving. 80 original photographs. Mostly 3 by 3 ½ inches.

One leaf blank and a small number of photographs loose – however the album appears complete. Album Good with fraying and bumping to covers; photographs generally Very Good.
